About Me:
I’m from Galicia, in northwestern Spain. I love enjoying to be with my friends and to listen to traditional Galician music. I have founded a sewing club in my city, where several women got together to sew and have coffee every friday!

I was living in Madrid for 12 years and a year ago I returned to my homeland, Galicia. I feel privileged to be able to live and work in such a wonderful place. In Galicia we speak Galician, a language similar to Portuguese. Being bilingual since I was born helped me learn many languages: Spanish, Galician, English, Portuguese, some French and Catalan. In addition, returning to my homeland has made me reconnect with the traditional Galician culture, with many common roots with Ireland and Scotland!
I have always loved to sew, knit and embroider. So when I returned, a friend and I founded a Sewing Club where, every week, women and men get together for coffee, chatting and sewing. There are no teachers, there are no students, because we all learn from everyone.

I studied cell biology in Galicia, but I moved to Madrid because there were more possibilities to work in a research laboratory. For 5 years, I did my PhD on biomaterials and bone cells. I investigated how to get bone cells and bone stem cells to produce more (and better bone) based on the materials used in hip and knee replacements. For example, if we use titanium materials for prostheses, is the bone better? What if we use titanium that has a rough surface instead of a smooth one? Is it better to fix the breaks?
When I finished my PhD, I changed professions and became a science teacher at a college. This led me to dedicate myself to doing educational projects, especially in vulnerable environments. So right now I’m doing projects in schools, like this one I am a Scientist!

My Typical Day:
When I got up, I try not to talk to anyone until I have had a coffee and listened to the radio a bit. It’s hard for me to wake up! I exercise until 09:30 and then I get on the computer. Working from home has some privileges! I eat something around 1:00 p.m. and I keep working until 6:30 p.m. or 7:00 p.m. Then I usually go for a walk with my partner and friends.

Right now I work as a freelancer, that is, “I work for projects!, I have not a permanent job. Instead, I have projects to work with for months or weeks.
This gives me a lot of flexibility when it comes to organizing my schedule. There are days that I work more, others that less. I love this! I listen to my body and based on that I act. There are always days when you are more energetic and days when you are not able to concentrate.
Also, working from home is wonderful. It allows you to organize yourself differently, exercise at home, eat better, not be so stressed going from one place to another.
Basically my job consists of designing projects that will later reach you, the students, or the teachers. For example, designing training to help teachers do their jobs better; or design activities so that, during Science Day, students from schools in Spain can learn more about Science.

What I'd do with the prize money:
I would love to set up an Instagram and a Tik Tok in which to show the life of Galician scientists. Did you know that the inventor of the first electronic book in history was a Galician woman? Also, I think it is important to use a Social Network that reaches all audiences.
